The Stallworth Fund

The William A. Stallworth, MD Endowment Fund

Dr. William A. Stallworth, the namesake and honoree of the Endowment Fund was a friend of recovery and a friend of Addiction Recovery Resources of New Orleans. He was a member of the founding Board of Directors and a guiding light in our early efforts to provide affordable, effective treatment for addictive disorders.

Bill died of a heart attack in his office on January 3, 2000. He was born and lived in Selma, Alabama then in New Orleans. He graduated Xavier University and Howard University Medical School and was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. In addition to his many medical staff and medical association memberships, he was Medical Director of Xavier University, the Velocity Foundation and the Black Alcohol/Drug Treatment Center of Louisiana. He is survived by a large and loving family. We miss him.

Guidelines for use of the Stallworth Endowment Fund
Money gained from all fund raising activities at Addiction Recovery Resources will be used to support The Stallworth Endowment Fund, unless otherwise specified at the time money is gained. Stallworth Endowment Fund loans will be offered to patients at an interest free rate to pay for all or part of treatment at Addiction Recovery Resources. The purpose is to afford an individual a treatment opportunity within the limits of his/her current financial situation. The money will be a loan to the patient and expected to be paid back in full to the fund within a two-year period of time. A small portion of the Stallworth money may be used, at the discretion of the board, to support fund raising activities for Addiction Recovery Resources.

Qualifications for Consideration
Any patient or prospective patient may be qualified to receive Stallworth Endowment funds regardless of sex, age, race, gender preference, physical challenges, or national origin. The only requirements are:

  • An ability to demonstrate the desire to gain and maintain sobriety.
  • An expressed desire and the potential to repay the fund within two years.
  • A life circumstance that provides an incentive for maintained sobriety.

Procedure for Application
Any staff member can identify and recommend a patient or potential patient to receive endowment funds. Once identified the following steps will be followed.

The patient will:

  • Meet with a clinical staff member, an assessment will be completed to determine clinical appropriateness and determine the presence of the endowment requirements. If the assessment determines both then:
  • Meet with the Business Office Manager at which time the patient’s ability to meet the repayment qualifications will be determined. If it is determined then:
  • Meet with the Executive Director and/or the board representative, in person or by phone, to discuss the program and determine if the individual’s level of commitment is appropriate. There will then be a meeting, in person or by phone, between the board representative, the Business Office Manager and the assessing clinical staff member. They will reach consensus as to whether the money will be offered to the individual. If it is offered:
  • The patient will meet with the Business Office Manager and a repayment agreement will be formulated.

* If you would like to make a donation, please contact Jan Clifford at 504-780-2766. We will accept cash, credit cards, and checks. We are a nonprofit agency and will provide you with receipts for tax deduction.
Use for Fund Raising Activities

Requests to use Stallworth funds for fund raising activities must be submitted to the board. The proposal will contain:

  • An over view of the fund raising event
  • A brief summary of how the money will be used
  • A brief summary of how the endowment fund will be impacted.

The board will consider the request and a simple majority will be needed for approval.
