Buprenorphine is a new drug approved
for the treatment of opiate
dependence. Dr. Roy is approved by
the U.S. Drug Enforcement
Administration to provide
Buprenorphine for detoxification or
maintenance of patients with opiate
dependence.
There are many ways to address the
physical dependence on narcotic
substances. Addiction Recovery
resources offers abstinence-based
professional treatment with a focus
on long-term recovery in 12-Step
oriented programs. In most patients,
detoxification using Buprenorphine
with subsequent administration of
Naltrexone, an opiate blocker, is
the preferred method. In patients
where this strategy has failed and
in some patients who are unable to
complete detoxification, maintenance
with Buprenorphine may be the
appropriate medication strategy. Dr.
Roy and the staff at Addiction
Recovery Resources assess each
patient and makes recommendations
for treatment.
Dr. Roy and the treatment team at
Addiction Recovery Resources firmly
believe that addictive disorder is a
chronic, fatal, progressive illness
that requires treatment.
Detoxification and/or maintenance
therapy with medications is a
prerequisite for treatment, not
treatment for addiction. To receive
Buphrenorphine, all patients would
be required to be in a treatment
process either at Addiction Recovery
Resources or in some other venue.
Patients are required to participate
in treatment components and their
efforts are closely monitored by
professionally trained staff.
Relapse to the use of the original
drug(s) of abuse or other addicting
drugs will stimulate a
recommendation for further or more
intense treatment. A decision to
avoid or circumvent this recommended
treatment will be grounds for
discontinuation of Buprenorphine
therapy.
Continued success in treatment and
recovery is expected with sufficient
effort on the part of the patient
along with appropriate medication
and professional management of
addictive disease (and other
concurrent illnesses). Buprenorphine
is a new tool that will allow us to
be effective in helping patients who
have been unable to enter the
hospital for detoxification or
unsuccessful following previous
hospitalizations. We look forward to
working with patients detoxified
with or maintained on Buprenorphine
and our experience to date has been
very positive.
